Diet and nutritional supplements to Help Overcome Diabetes
It is generally held that Type 2 Diabetes is due to a problem with the metabolism of carbohydrates. While carbohydrate consumption and metabolism is part of the picture, the basic reason for Type 2 Diabetes is a problem with fats and oils in the diet. The good news is that this can easily be rectified and often rapid improvement sets in.
With Type 2 Diabetes, insulin cannot penetrate the billions of cell membranes in the body, and consequently the cells cannot receive sufficient insulin. This results in sugar in the blood (blood glucose) not being absorbed into the cells resulting in high blood sugar, low cell sugar and a host of other health problems that gradually undermine the body’s health, resulting in chronic sickness and sometimes, eventually death.
The reason for this is tragically simple, the consumption of manufactured oils and fats rather than unadulterated fats and oils as was consumed before the diabetes epidemic (and still today in remote parts of the world where a traditional diet is adhered to and where diabetes is almost non-existent), Today, Diabetes affects a very high proportion of the population.
What happens is this: every cell in the body is surrounded by an oily membrane that keeps it separate from the surrounding extra cellular fluid. This oily membrane is designed to allow nutrients and oxygen to flow in, and carbon dioxide and waste products to flow out. The consumption of the following fats / oils results in a gradual hardening of the oils / fats in the cell membrane, preventing hormones and nutrients from passing through this barrier. This is not only a cause of Type 2 Diabetes, but also of many other chronic diseases and represents possibly the biggest single health tragedy of the century as it has been caused entirely by the manufacture, marketing and sale of fats and oils that harden in the body and have replaced our traditional fats and oils. In fact, false information has been released to the media, and taken up by governments and their health organizations, thereby brain washing the public into an almost universal acceptance. This is in spite of the fact that hundreds of studies around the world have overturned the cholesterol myth, and that the consumption of cholesterol rich naturally occurring foods does not lead to heart and cardiovascular disorders.
Thus, Type 2 Diabetes and its early hyperinsulinaemic symptoms, are whole-body symptoms of this basic cellular failure to metabolise glucose properly. Each cell of the body, for reasons which are becoming clearer, finds itself unable to transport glucose from the bloodstream to its interior. The glucose then remains in the bloodstream, or is stored as body fat or as glycogen, or is other wise disposed of in urine.
It appears that when insulin binds to a cell membrane receptor, it initiates a complex cascade of biochemical reactions inside the cell. This causes a class of glucose transporters known as GLUT4 molecules to leave their parking area inside the cell and travel to the inside surface of the plasma cell membrane.
When in the membrane, they migrate to special areas of the membrane called caveolae areas. There, by another series of biochemical reactions, they identify and hook up with glucose molecules and transport them into the interior of the cell by process called endocysis. Within the cell’s interior, this glucose is then burned as fuel by the mitochondria to produce energy to power cellular activity. Thus these GLUT4 transporters lower glucose in the bloodstream by transporting it out of the bloodstream into all the cells of the body.
Many of the molecules involved in these glucose and insulin mediated pathways are lipids; that is, they are fatty acids. A healthy plasma cell membrane, now known to be an active player in the glucose scenario, contains a complement of cis-type 3 unsaturated fatty acids. This makes the membrane relatively fluid and slippery. When these cis-fatty acids are chronically unavailable because of our diet, trans-fatty acids and short and medium-chain saturated fatty acids are substituted in the cell membrane. These substitutions make the cellular membrane stiffer and more sticky, and inhibit the glucose transport mechanism. Thus, in the absence of sufficient Omega 3 fatty acids in our patients, these fatty acid substitutions take place, the mobility of the GLUT4 transporters is diminished, the interior biochemistry of the cell is changed and glucose remains elevated in the bloodstream.
Elsewhere in the body, the pancreas secretes excess insulin, the liver manufactures fat from the excess sugar, the adipose cells store excess fat, the body goes into a high urinary mode, insufficient cellular energy is available for bodily activity and the entire endocrine system becomes distorted. Eventually, pancreatic failure occurs, body weight plummets and a Diabetic crisis is precipitated.
Below are the oils/fats that promote hardening of the cell membranes, hardening of the arteries, and must be eliminated from the diet if you want to gain health and overcome Type 2 Diabetes.
(1) All vegetable and seed and bean oils that have been heated in their manufacture. Almost all vegetable and seed bean and nut oils have been heat extracted, they are only free of heating if it states Cold pressed/unheated and these will usually have to be obtained from a health shop.
(2) All vegetable and seed and bean oils that have been heated as part of the cooking process, especially if fired or roasted or grilled. The higher the temperature, and also the more often used (The best way to form vast amounts of trans-fats, the fats that harden in the body, is to re-use a vegetable seed or bean or nut oil from frying several times!)
(3) All processed fats and oils, this almost eliminates all processed food, this includes
· All margarine, even if it says it has some butter or olive oil in
· All hydrogenated fats
· And again, vegetable seed or nut oil used in the recipe of the cooked food. This includes Soya oil, canola oil
It is best not to fry at all, but small amounts of Olive Oil, or even better if you can obtain it, Coconut Oil, heated at low temperatures (with the lid on to keep in steam) so they do not brown, is unlikely to form sufficient trans-fats to cause a problem
To regain a soft oily membrane around the billions of cells in our body the following oils and fats may be used, these will gradually dissolve hardened fats and oils out of the body.
(1) Hemp Oil (cold pressed of course) taken from the spoon at one to three dessertspoons daily.
(2) Cod Liver Oil 1 dessertspoon daily
(3) Olive oil in salads, or used raw in food recipes.
(4) Linseed Oil raw, cold pressed. This has to be obtained in dark glass bottles, preferably nitrogen sealed and consumed within about 2 weeks of opening. This is very rich in omega 3 essential fatty acid and may give faster results initially, but is not the most balanced of oils so we recommend using it only for a few weeks then taking a combination of Hemp Oil with Cod Liver Oil.
(5) Eggs, from healthy chickens free range. These should be taken raw, three or more daily. Even raw saturated fats as obtained in a traditional diet help to clear the body of hardened fats. Please see our article about Raw Eggs to answer questions you may have.
(6) Un-pasteurized milk if you can obtain it.
(7) Full fat yogurt e.g. organic cows, sheep or goats yogurt.
Please avoid low fat foods, and all processed foods.
Also see the article on Hemp Oil, this describes a hemp oil protein blend for possibly even faster progress along the healing route and can be as simple as blending hemp oil with yogurt.
Suggested Supplements for Type 2 Diabetes
Generally the nutritional status of individuals with Type 2 Diabetes will be below par. This is not necessarily due to poor selection of food, but often due to mineral and trace element deficiency in our soils due to ‘factory farming’ using artificial fertilizers and pesticides etc. Generally the higher levels of nutrients reaching your cells the better chance of your body healing itself once you have made the crucial changes to you diet as outlined above. So we recommend a general nutritional and mineral and trace element supplement - these are detailed in the Core Regime.
Specifically we recommend the use of the following products. blood sugar levels should of course be monitored as these products can be very effective at reducing blood glucose:
Food State GTF Chromium- helps to balance blood sugar and promotes assimilation of glucose into the cells. Chromium is a vital tool in overcoming Type 2 Diabetes, and helping Type 1 Diabetes to improve. Scientists have found that the trace mineral Chromium plays a role in the management of Diabetes, according to several recent studies and is widely acknowledged as a mineral that greatly affects the management of diabetes.
The pancreas needs to produce the correct amount of insulin in order to transport glucose from our blood into our cells as a source of energy. In diabetics there is either a production of insulin which is greater than the body needs or no production at all. The three type of diabetes that people face are: Insulin-Dependent, Non Insulin-Dependent, or Gestational Diabetes. The first type, Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus also known as Type I affects approximately 5-10% of all persons with Diabetes, this disease prevents the production of insulin. Either the person is unable to produce insulin or can only produce minimal amounts, this occurs more often than not in children and young adults, but can result at any age. Type I diabetics must have daily injections of insulin and constantly monitor their blood glucose. The second type, Non Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus also know as type II affects nearly 90-95% of all people with diabetes. In this case it usually develops in adults older than the age of 40, in these people the pancreas can produce some insulin, but the body cannot use it effectively. The last type of diabetes is Gestational Diabetes which develops during pregnancy. Women who have had gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing diabetes later in their life. With these three types of diabetes affecting so many individuals, there has been a constant effort to combat the disease.
Food State GTF Chromiumhelps insulin do its job by the co-factor equation with insulin. The co-factor equation is the theory that our body has receptor sites for each hormone, mineral, or vitamin that is necessary for the body. Research has shown that Chromium levels determine the number of cell receptors for insulin, therefore if there are adequate insulin levels this will prevent the onset of Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes. In theory, Chromium may help insulin deliver glucose to your cells more efficiently. Chromium deficiency is also linked to other areas of health and disease: "... the possibility cannot be ignored that inadequate Chromium status may be responsible in part for some cases of impaired glucose tolerance, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, glycosuria (sugar in urine), and refractoriness to insulin”
In a trial in China, 180 individuals with Non insulin-Dependent diabetes where placed into 3 different groups of 60. One group was given a placebo pill, one group was given 200mcg of chromium, and the other group was given 1000mcg of chromium for the management of diabetes. The results showed that after 2 to 4 months of taking the chromium supplement the diabetics had marked reductions in their blood sugar. Another finding was that the most sensitive laboratory measure of diabetic control, hemoglobin A(ic), dropped to normal. The results can be extrapolated out to all groups of diabetics. If an Insulin-Dependent diabetic, through the use of chromium, lowers their blood sugar they will be able to lead a more healthy lifestyle. With normal blood sugar levels they will decrease the number of complications that may result due to lack of control in their management of diabetes.
A recent review of 15 studies looking at the usefulness of Chromium for Diabetes found that Chromium had significant benefits (Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics 2007). A total of 1690 subjects received chromium at between 200-1000mgs per day for periods ranging from one week to nine months. “The data indicate that chromium supplementation represents a uniquely efficacious modality for glycaemic control in subjects with diabetes,” wrote reviewers C. Leigh Broadhurst and Philip Domenico. “Indeed, 13 of 15 clinical studies reported significant improvement in at least one outcome of glycaemic control.”
Broadhurst and Domenico report that six out of ten studies measuring fasting glucose levels showed a significant improvement of 15.3 per cent, and postprandial glucose levels of 18.9 per cent. Fasting insulin levels, measured in four studies, improved by 29.8 per cent, while postprandial insulin improved by 15 per cent from baseline as a result of chromium supplementation. The authors note that people with type-2 diabetes may need higher doses than normal people for a benefit to be observed. The supplement has a “compelling safety profile”, said the researchers, and is an inexpensive and efficacious way of improving diabetes control.
Zinc- Scientists at Notre Dame* and at the University of Illinois have discovered that Zinc promotes the transport of glucose and amino acids (proteins) to the cells and is therefore thought to be another helpful trace element in overcoming this disorder. Interestingly the modern diet and lifestyle together with deficiencies of minerals and trace elements especially zinc and chromium in the soil, due to poor soil management, makes a deficiency of these trace elements very common, and it is common nutritional practice to supplement with the trace minerals zinc and chromium.
Please note: Food state minerals are more reliable and offer improved transport to the cells, and work at much lower doses than non food state trace elements. We therefore recommend Food State Zinc (best taken on an empty stomach e.g. on rising and retiring, and Food State GTF Chromium (best taken before food at least twice daily)
Iodine
Iodine supplementation is almost of universal benefit, due to high ancestral needs, and whatever your health status, whatever your condition the wide-acting benefits of Iodine and it's safety make it one of the most fundamental ways we can further our health and well-being with just a few drops a day added to a drink. In the opinion of the editor, here is no single, convenient, cost effective way to boost health than this.
From the experience of Physicians mentioned below Iodine supplementation can significantly contribute to normalization of blood sugar levels of Insulin dependant (and by implication also non-insulin dependant) diabetes.
Furthermore, as detailed in the Iodine article (Iodine Why We Need It click here) using significant doses of Iodine will eliminate harmful micro-organisms, that in the vast majority of cases, contribute to the auto-immune disturbances that are often involved in diabetes. This effect alone can help to mitigate diabetes and other auto-immune disorders.
Dr. George Flechas
This, in part, would already start to explain why Dr. Flechas sees such dramatic results with his diabetic patients. Why would many people who take iodine report that they have a greater sense of well-being, increased energy, and a lifting of brain fog? They feel warmer in cold environments, need somewhat less sleep, improved skin complexion, and have more regular bowel movements. The most obvious answer is that iodine is a trace mineral used to synthesize hormones and is a mineral that is very important to how hormones function at the hormone receptor sites.
Thyroxin and Triiodo-thyronine stimulates and maintains normal heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature. [xvii] "Despite the general medical dependence upon special hormone tests, such as TSH, etc, temperature appears to be much more accurate for assessing thyroid function. During the past decade, I have noticed that 90% of individuals have a temperature BELOW normal.
The oral temperature before getting out of bed in the morning should be 97.6 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Mid-afternoon the temperature should be 98.6. Temperature is the simplest measure of basal metabolic rate, the key function of the thyroid gland," said Dr. Norman Shealy,
Iodine's ability to revive hormonal sensitivity seems to significantly improve insulin sensitivity. Dr. Flechas said, “It was while treating a large 320-pound woman with insulin dependent diabetes that we learned a valuable lesson regarding the role of iodine in hormone receptor function. This woman had come in via the emergency room with a very high random blood sugar of 1,380 mg/dl. She was then started on insulin during her hospitalization and was instructed on the use of a home glucometer. She was to use her glucometer two times per day. Two weeks later on her return office visit for a checkup of her insulin dependent diabetes she was informed that during her hospital physical examination she was noted to have FBD. She was recommended to start on 50 mg of iodine (4 tablets) at that time. One week later she called us requesting to lower the level of insulin due to having problems with hypoglycemia. She was told to continue to drop her insulin levels as long as she was experiencing hypoglycemia and to monitor her blood sugars carefully with her glucometer.
Four weeks later during an office visit her glucometer was downloaded to my office computer, which showed her to have an average random blood sugar of 98. I praised the patient for her diligent efforts to control her diet and her good work at keeping her sugars under control with the insulin. She then informed me that she had come off her insulin three weeks earlier and had not been taking any medications to lower her blood sugar. When asked what she felt the big change was, she felt that her diabetes was under better control due to the use of iodine.”

Alpha Lipoic Acid- this helps cellular membranes directly through its anti-oxidant action. It is one of the few fat soluble anti-oxidants and has a special affinity for cell membranes and also nerve cells. It can help to lower excess blood sugar. Alpha Lipoic Acidfunctions as a co-enzyme in sugar metabolism. In a study of adult diabetic patients, Alpha Lipoic Acid increased cellular uptake and burning of glucose by approximately 50%. This study showed that Alpha Lipoic Acid could be extremely beneficial to diabetics and those who are borderline diabetic (insulin resistant). In other studies ALA significantly reduced symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (pain, burning and numbness) in the feet and improved cardiac autonomic dysfunction in non-insulin dependent diabetics. Alpha Lipoic Acid increases insulin sensitivity and optimizes the use of glucose for energy and if glucose can be effectively used as cellular fuel, it will not be stored as fat.
In Germany, Alpha Lipoic Acid is an approved treatment for Diabetic Neuropathy where high blood sugar levels over several years cause long-term damage to the nerve fibres, in Diabetics, this normally first presents as reduced sensation in the feet and usually spreads further up the legs. The superior antioxidant properties of Alpha Lipoic Acid help to reduce events in the body that cause the reduced endoneural blood flow and oxygen tension that occurs in cases of Diabetic Neuropathy.
Alka-Vita - this liquid silicon supplement provides an abundance of free electrons and is therefore a ‘mother anti-oxidant’, we have received anecdotal reports and testimonials that diabetes has been helped with this product. It acts as a mother anti-oxidant, and may helps to transport nutrients into the cells, since electrons are involved in drawing nutrients (including hormones) through the cell membranes.
Chronic low-level Acidosis is believed by many researchers to be an underlying contributor to diseases such as Diabetes. Maintaining the recommended slightly alkaline pH of human blood at 7.365 is critical to optimal health. An over acidic body pH is a reflection of imbalance and sets the stage for disease. It reduces the body's ability to absorb and utilize nutrients. It reduces energy production within the cells, as well as the cells ability to repair itself and detoxify metabolic by products. Every living cell within our bodies creates waste products. All these waste products must be detoxified (made inert) and discharged for us to stay healthy. Virtually all waste products are ACIDIC. For whatever reason, most of the time we do not rid ourselves of 100% of these waste products. Metabolically, living can be seen as a constant struggle to maintain alkalinity. It quite remarkable that just 4 drops of Alka-Vita (Daily therapeutic dose 40 drops, maintenance dose 20 drops), will raise the pH of a glass of water to a highly alkaline pH, typically pH9. Alka-Vita has been used with great success in cases of Diabetes, so much so, we strongly recommend that you monitor your blood sugar level when taking Alka-Vita as the need for insulin and other medications is often less.
Hemp Oil is the most balanced of all vegetable source oils. Raw oils/fats are essential to recovering from diabetes.
VitaProtect anti-oxidants such as Grape Seed OPC may help to repair capillary damage and generally protect the circulation.
Control blood sugar manually during the recovery cycle

Under medical supervision, gradually discontinue all oral hypoglycemic agents along with any additional drugs given to counteract their side effects. Develop natural blood-sugar control by the use of glycaemic tables, by consuming frequent small meals (including fibre-rich foods), by regular post-prandial exercise, and by the complete avoidance of all sugars, and sugar substitutes and alcohol until blood sugar stabilises in the normal range. Keep score by using a pinprick - type glucose meter. Keep track of everything you do with a medical diary.
When the blood sugar controller again starts to work correctly, gradually introduce additional healthy foods to the diet. Test the effect of these added foods by monitoring blood sugar levels with the pinprick-type blood sugar monitor. Be sure to include the results of these tests in your diary also.
Continue the program until normal insulin values are also restored after blood sugar levels begin to stabilise in the normal region. Once blood sugar levels fall into the normal range, the pancreas will gradually stop overproducing insulin. This process will typically take a little longer and can be tested by having your physician send a sample of your blood to a lab for a serum insulin determination. A good idea is to wait a couple of months after blood sugar control is restored and then have your physician check your insulin level. It’s nice to have blood sugar in the normal range; its even nicer to have this accomplished without excess insulin in the bloodstream.
Separately repair the collateral damage done by the disease. Vascular problems caused by a chronically elevated glucose level will normally reverse themselves without conscious effort. The effects of retinopathy and of peripheral neuropathy, for example, will usually self repair. However, when the fine capillaries in the basement membranes of the kidneys begin to leak due to chronic high blood glucose, the kidneys compensate by laying down scar tissue to prevent the leakage: This scar tissue remains even after the diabetes is cured, and is the reason why the kidney damage is not believed to self repair.
A word of warning... When retinopathy develops, there may be a temptation to have the damage repaired by laser surgery. This laser technique stops the retinal bleeding by creating scar tissue where the leaks have developed. This scar tissue will prevent normal healing of the fine capillaries in the eye when the diabetic is reversed. By reversing the diabetes instead of opting for last surgery, there is an excellent chance that the eye will heal completely. However, if laser surgery is done, this healing will always be complicated by the scar tissue left by the laser. (There are nutritional supplements that can help with this ed. 1) The arterial and vascular damage done by years of elevated sugar and insulin and by the proliferation of systemic Candidawill slowly reverse due to improved diet. (Colloidal Silverand Zell-Oxygencan help to improve the immune system and eliminate Candida) However, it takes many years to clean out the arteries by this form of oral chelation. Arterial damage can be reversed much more quickly by using intravenous chelation therapy. What would normally take many years through diet alone can often be done in six months with intravenous therapy. This is reputed to be effective over 80% of the time. For obvious reasons, don’t expect your doctor to approve of this, particularly if he’s a heart specialist.
Recovery Time
The prognosis is usually swift, recovery from the disease and restoration of normal health and energy levels in a few months to a year or more. The length of time that it takes to affect a cure depends upon how long the disease was allowed to develop.
For those who work quickly to reverse the disease after early discovery, the time is usually a few months or less. For those who have had the disease for many years, this recovery time may lengthen to a year or more. Thus, there is good reason to get busy reversing this disease as soon as it becomes clearly identified.
By the time you get to this point in this article, and if we’ve done a good job of explaining our diabetes epidemic, you should know what causes it, what orthodox medical treatment is all about, and why diabetes has become a national and international disgrace. Of even greater importance, you have become acquainted with a self-help programme that has demonstrated great potential to actually cure this disease.
A More Simple Dietary Guide During The Recovery Phase
The complex procedures above, have not taken into account the improvements that can be obtained using the supplements detailed in this article. Also for persons who do not have serious Diabetes, a more moderate and simple dietary guide can be used thus:
Avoid all refined carbohydrates, processed food, sugar, sugar substitutes (artificial sweeteners can actually cause havoc with blood sugar control). Generally avoid bread even if wholemeal although small amounts may be tolerated. Oats have some stabilising effect on blood sugar so may be included in the diet as can small amounts of wholemeal rice. Refined carbohydrates include pasta, non wholemeal bread, biscuits cakes etc. Any fried food as discussed before examples chips and crisps would be a most harmful use of heated fats/oils. The amount of fruit consumed per session should be kept low, but Avocadoes are allowed and recommended. This is because they are a high raw fat food and low glyceamic fruit. Fats of the correct kind, as detailed in this article actually slow down the rate of blood sugar rise when carbohydrates are consumed. So e.g. a weight loss cereal with low fat and high carb is an example of the sorts of foods the industry has pushed onto to us for weight control but is counterproductive as far as glyceamic control and is another reason for the increasing diabetes epidemic.
If taking raw vegetable juices, these should keep the carbohydrate to a minimum, i.e. Mainly celery and only a little carrot. Also, a green juice such as Barley Grass Juice Powderblended with water is an excellent low carbohydrate/high nutrition juice.
For the Type 1 Diabetic
An alternative methodology for the treatment of Type I diabetes is now available. It was developed in modern hospitals in Madras, India, and subjected to rigorous double-blind studies to prove its efficacy. It operates to restore normal pancreatic beta cell function so that the pancreas can again produce insulin as it should. This approach apparently was capable of curing Type I diabetes in over 60% of the patients on whom it was tested. The major complication lies in whether the antigens that originally led to the autoimmune destruction of these beta cells have disappeared from or remain in the body.
Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune disorder and therefore the treatment protocol outline in the article Factors Involved In Auto-Immune Disorders And Effective, Natural Treatment Protocols can be followed as appropriate for your individual needs. This should be combined with the treatments (supplements and diet suggested for type 1 diabetes, although with type 1 you may need to use more carbohydrates as appropriate, but stick to natural unrefined and unprocessed foods as much as possible)
CAUTION
It is sensible to monitor blood sugar when you introduce new foods/supplements as the level of drugs you may be taking may need to be adjusted to maintain a stable blood sugar level.
